A DIY Shower Curtain with Tassels

Tassels, tassels everywhere! Does your storage basket need an upgrade? Put a tassel on it! Could your handbag benefit from that extra special something? Put a tassel on it. Pillows, rugs and shower curtains are other excellent contenders for tasseled embellishments. Speaking of shower curtains, today’s easy DIY project is perfect for those with limited time. It can also be helpful if you’re on a budget or you’re looking for a way to add flair to a kids’ powder room. The formula is simple: Jazz up a store-bought shower curtain by hanging handmade tassels on the shower hooks. Super easy and no sewing is required! Keep reading for all the DIY details…

Tassels to the Rescue

Why have tassels experienced such a huge comeback? They’re an easy way to add personality to a variety of decorative items. Plus, you can make them yourself! Not to mention, they can work with a range of interior design styles, from boho chic to earthy and modern.

Interested in learning how to make a tassel? The process couldn’t be easier! Start with the supply of your choice. Yarn is perfect for larger tassels, as its bulk helps create earthy, substantial embellishments that get noticed. Embroidery thread/floss is an excellent choice for creating professional-looking tassels if you want a more delicate result. Here’s how the yarn tassels featured in today’s post were created:

Step 1: Wrap the yarn around your hand so it loops until it has reached the thickness of your choice. Sixteen to twenty wraps around the hand is a good place to start.

Step 2: Tie a piece of string at the top of the looped bands so they are held together (shown above). This step ensures that your tassel stays tidy. The loose strings that remain at the top will be used later in the project, so don’t snip them!

Step 3: Take another piece of string and tie it about a third of the way down from the top, creating a “neck” for your tassel.

Step 4: Trim the ends of your tassel for a clean look.

Shower Curtain Fringe

Now it’s time to hang your tassels on your shower curtain! For starters, shower hooks create a nice look for this project, although it’s possible to secure tassels to shower rings as well.

To add tassels to the shower curtain, simply use the loose string at the top of your tassels to tie them onto the shower hooks or rings! Not only is this an easy, no-sew approach, it ensures that you can easily remove the tassels at a later time if need be.

For a few final touches, fluff your tassels, make sure they hang straight, and trim any remaining loose/long pieces of yarn. We love the way the aqua color of the yarn creates a breezy, fresh look in the powder room below.

If you’re curious about products featured in the shoot, we embellished CB2’s Ribbon White Shower Curtain for this DIY project! The featured artwork is Busy Beach by Sisi and Seb, available through Society6. Beachy bathroom style is possible all year long with coastal art prints, shades of aqua, and houseplants!

Happy decorating, and don’t forget to put a tassel on it! Thanks for reading.
