Small Rustic Bathrooms: 15 Fabulous Ideas for Everyone

The small bathroom is one where trying out too many styles can leave the space feeling cluttered and even claustrophobic at times. This is why we prefer the more modern styles in the tiny bathroom where keeping colors down to one or two helps a lot. But the last few years have seen homeowners and designers trying out styles beyond the transitional and contemporary and those that usher in textural and visual contrast are a hot trend right now. One such small bathroom style that we simply cannot get enough of is rustic. Modern rustic bathrooms combine ergonomics and the more vernacular aesthetics in a seamless fashion.

The small bathroom is a surprisingly common feature in most homes across the globe. For some it is a necessity and for others it serves as the spare bathroom, the bathroom in the guest room or even as one that adds functionality to the isolated home office. From the understated to the captivating, the more modern to the completely rustic, this is a look at some of the best rustic bathrooms of 2019 as we head into the New Year. Enjoy!

Bathroom with Natural Finishes

The one advantage you have with the rustic bathroom in small spaces is the ease with which you can try out different finishes without it seeming out of place. Stone walls can shape the backdrop for a beautiful small rustic bathroom and combining it with a live-edge vanity makes the bathroom even more special. Wood and stone can be combined easily in the small bathroom and you will not feel overwhelmed with the use of these multiple textures since there is little visual fragmentation. Put the glass shower area in the corner and you are all set!

Modernity Clubbed with Rustic Charm

In the small bathroom, it is good to combine modern and rustic finishes as you can achieve a balance between a room that is visually spacious and interesting as well. Polished modern backdrops can be coupled with rustic accents without any fuss and you can usher in just a hint of coziness without going over the top. Throw in a bit of gray into the mix and combine it with wooden vanity along with a glass shower area to create a smart and beautiful bathroom that will serve you well for years to come.

Smart Lighting Makes a Difference

In the small rustic bathroom, lighting makes a big difference to the overall ambiance and getting it right can make or break the space. Couple the right accent lighting next to the mirror above vanity with sconce lighting or pendants while using smart recessed lighting for rest of the room helps with a balanced look. Another approach is to bring ample natural light into the tiny bathroom with a large window or even a central skylight. Using white, light gray and a large mirror in the bathroom gives it an ever roomier visual appeal.

Wairau Valley House: Exquisite Concrete and Eucalyptus Saligna Clad Home in New Zealand

We are awe-struck by the sheer beauty of the landscape every time we take a look at homes and interior inspirations from New Zealand. No matter how you look at it, it is often the scenery outside that ends up stealing the show in this gorgeous nation. The Wairau Valley House sitting just a few minutes away from Blenheim and nestled on a lot that overlooks Wairau River and the valley beyond it is not much different. Designed by Parsonson Architects, the house is draped in concrete and Eucalyptus Saligna with a balance between the warmth of wood and the sterile presence of concrete making a statement in itself. This is a house where the outdoor-indoor interplay is truly seamless!

Picture-perfect New Zealand home with refreshing pool and lovely garden

The living area of the house is open in its presence with the kitchen, dining area and other public spaces flowing into the pool and deck outside. A dashing fireplace is the focal point in the living room with half-walls and smart partitions delineating space without stopping light from flowing freely. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls and sliding doors further improve the connectivity with outdoors and the pool area cools the house naturally during the rare hot days.

Boxed Brilliance: Black and White Studio House Showcases Twisted Geometry!

Minimal, contemporary and visually captivating, the Studio House designed by fabi architekten bda in Germany is one that leaves you enthralled with its unique arrangement of twin levels. It is a white lower level box that holds a cantilevered upper level unit in black; both the units showcasing both geometric and visual contrast. A series of floor-to-ceiling glass walls connect the interior with the outdoors and it is the forest views beyond that bring in color and liveliness. The home itself is unassuming with white and wood shaping much of the interior.

It is the upper level that contains the open plan living space along with kitchen, dining and other areas that can be used for entertaining. Step below and you have the bedrooms and other private spaces that are sheltered by the forest around the home. Sitting on a sloped lot, the cantilevered boxes make the most of the landscape while showcasing exceptional architectural skill. Black asphalt and stone create a lovely outdoor area and you have a house that is as pleasing on the inside as it is striking on the outside. [Photography: Herbert Stolz]

The volumes open up targeted to the natural space, the forest. The buildings to the surroundings shine quiet and conciseness– unambiguity. Diving into the slope the visitor develops the house over an underground wardrobe-/ reception room – is soaked up through the ray of light over free overhanging stairs.

Turning It Inside Out: Amazing Brazilian Home Invites Landscape Indoors!

The focus on connecting the interior with the world outside is an increasingly important aspect of home design in the last few years. Connectivity with nature has once again taken center-stage with homeowners wanting to reconnect with all things natural. The gorgeous, spacious and cheerful House in Itaipava designed by Cadas Arquitetura sits in the forested region of the city of Rio and overlooks densely vegetated landscape outside. It was essential that the design of the house flipped conventions on their head and turned the focus towards the views on offer.

Open and modern design of the House in Itaipava with vernacular Brazilian Charm

This was done using an interesting design that employs a series of open walkways, corridors and other outdoor structures to connect different parts of the house. A glass façade ensures that there is ample natural light in the living area, kitchen and dining space. A seamless connectivity between the indoor areas and the garden just outside blur boundaries allowing the homeowners to enjoy both the worlds with ease. The walkways and the shaded regions also provide natural shade to the interior and cut down dependence on artificial cooling systems and keep out scorching hot Rio sun.

Wood plays the biggest role in shaping the overall contours of the home both on the inside and outside. Wooden slats filter in sunlight and also improve acoustics of the house. An indoor swimming pool, sauna, library and additional guest spaces complete this exquisite Brazilian residence where colorful accents are kept down to a bare minimum.
