20 DIY Wall Hangings with Modern Flair

Wall hangings continue to be a top design trend! With their ability to add texture and modern style to any room they grace, it’s easy to understand their appeal. Plus, there are serious DIY possibilities! Today we explore the many ways that you can craft your own wall hanging, from pieces bursting with pom poms to latch hook creations. There’s even a collection of no-hassle projects that can be completed in an afternoon (or less)! Check out our roundup of DIY wall hangings, where you’re likely to find a project idea to match almost anything you’ve spotted for sale. We’re pretty smitten with the DIY Rope Rainbow Wall Hanging below (from Pure Sweet Joy). Keep reading for more of our favorites…

Easy Does It

When you’re short on time, don’t fret. You don’t have to skimp on style! It can’t get much easier than this modern wall hanging by Molly Madfis, featured on West Elm’s blog, Front & Main. A wooden dowel, some yarn and scissors are all it takes. Strategic cutting creates a contemporary look:

Another easy project that packs a powerful punch: this DIY Gold Ring Wall Hanging from Lauren Conrad. The more interesting the color and texture of the yarn, the better!

Studio DIY’s No-Weave Rainbow Wall Hanging has a beautiful textured look…and you can’t help but revel in all of the vibrant color! More is more here, but one thing this wall hanging ISN’T is difficult to create. Which is why we love it:

Another gem from Studio DIY: this Easy Fringe Wall Hanging! While it may look like a major endeavor, using a flatweave rug as a base/background and covering it with cotton brush fringe gets the job done in stress-free style:

This Large Tapestry Wall Hanging from A Beautiful Mess is the perfect wall hanging hack! Instead of investing loads of time to weave your own from scratch, start with a woven leather rug, and you’re set!

Embroidery hoops make this next project a sculptural statement, yet completing the wall hanging is much easier than you’d think. We’re also loving the use of color! Once again, you can find the details at A Beautiful Mess:

Last but not least, Homey Oh My’s Modern Yarn Hanging incorporates a gold ring for a special touch. Using yarn in neutral tones such as linen and charcoal creates an earthy, contemporary feel:

Pom Pom Power

If you’re like us, you can’t get enough pom poms! So why not make them a part of your next wall hanging? Pure Sweet Joy’s DIY Pom-Pom Wall Hanging shows just how much texture and color can be added to your wall! A non-slip mat (or other gridded material) makes the perfect surface for attaching the pom poms. Details in the post.

This DIY Pom Pom Wall Hang from Sugar & Cloth is the epitome of radiant style! The best part: you can make it as involved of a project as you want it to be. Make each pom pom if you’re feeling extra crafty, or purchase them pre-made (from sources such as Etsy) to save some time!

We Are Scout’s Pom Pom Wall Hanging utilizes a range of neutral tones, plus some of our favorite welcoming hues (bring on the blush and lavender)! The beauty of each pom pom really stand out, as does the hint of asymmetrical style:

Tassel Time

Like pom poms, tassels are the ultimate crafty embellishment. No wonder they’ve made their way into wall hanging territory! Erin from Francois et Moi created this DIY Geometric Metal Wall Hanging using geometric shapes she found on Etsy. Tassels at the bottom create the perfect finish. Check out the full tutorial at Sugar & Cloth:

Homey oh My’s DIY Modern Tassel Wall Hanging makes clever use of yarn, beads and a wooden dowel. Black paint helps achieve a monochromatic look:

For an abundant look that piles on the texture, check out this DIY Tassel Wall Hanging from Honestly WTF. Hues such as cream, grey and blush take center stage, along with natural jute twine:

Latch Hook Love

If you like the “latch hook look” and you have a bit of time to invest, you’ll love the wall hanging ideas that follow. A Beautiful Mess’s Latch Hook Wall Hanging DIY features an amazing amount of texture and movement, making it a beautiful statement piece that you can customize with the colors of your choice:

This Latch Hook Wall Hanging from Honestly WTF shows how trimming the yarn to different lengths adds interest and intrigue. A beautiful finished product, don’t you think?!

There’s no denying that latch hook projects require a big dose of patience. But vibrant end results like Studio DIY’s DIY Rainbow Latch Hook Wall Hanging prove that some things are worth the effort! Isn’t this wall hanging the perfect addition to a colorful nursery?!

Getting Creative

This last batch of wall hangings takes a super creative turn, from the materials used to the whimsical presentation. For starters, The Learner Observer’s DIY Flower Wall Hanging is a lovely way to combine faux flowers and driftwood:

Also from The Learner Observer: this DIY woven wall hanging, created with the help of a frame and then surrounded by a frame! The ultimate statement piece:

And since Valentine’s Day is around the corner, it’s hard to resist the magic of hearts, especially when paired with tassels. Throw in a branch from your favorite tree, and you have a true work of art! Details at Alexandra Mavis.

Now who’s ready to stock up on yarn and get creative? Thanks for reading!

Festive Winter Decorations to Cure Your Post-Holiday Blues

For some design lovers, taking down holiday decorations is a breath of fresh air and a symbol of starting the new year with a clean slate. For others, it feels like removing the fun and festivity from home just as winter’s dark chill is kicking into high gear. Who says you have to start the new year with a stark interior?! By repurposing some of your holiday decor and adding a couple of other bright touches, you can bring joy and warmth to the room(s) of your choice. Whether you’re decorating for awards show viewing parties, getting an early start on Valentine’s Day, or simply looking for a little sparkle, these winter decorations can help you beat the post-holiday blues…

Repurposing Tinsel

One easy way to add a bit of shine to your interior is through the use of tinsel! Remember the tinsel drink stirrer trend that started earlier this decade? By snipping off a small section of tinsel from the a garland/strand and shaping it into a ball, you have an instant starburst that’s ready to hand on a new garland, sit on your shelf, or grace any surface you choose!

Perfect for awards show party decor, tinsel “balls” can also be combined with Valentine’s Day decor, as they have a festive, whimsical look that complements the magic and sparkle of the year’s most romantic holiday!

Try adding tinsel to the end of a garland and using the excess snips as confetti for your next winter party. More on tinsel and winter decor later in the post…

Honeycomb Balls

Tissue paper honeycomb balls are instantly festive, as they channel a retro party vibe. Above and below, we see honeycomb balls in a shade of “vintage peach”, available via Amazon. Honeycomb balls are perfect for New Year’s Eve decor, as they remind us of the ball drop in the final moments of the year.

Combined with silver and gold, the peach balls featured in today’s photos add just the right amount of blush. Don’t be afraid to leave them up throughout January! Of course, honeycomb balls beautifully transition to Valentine’s Day, especially when showcased in rosy tones. There’s something sweet and charming about them, and the look is only enhanced when heart decor enters the picture:

Try hanging them ornament-style from the ceiling (or garland-style on the wall–not fully unfolded so the back is flat). Top with a tinsel ball and a heart for an extra festive touch! Note how silver ribbon helps tie this look together. Metallics + peachy tones = a big dose of chic!

Glittering Hearts

Maybe Valentine’s Day isn’t your thing. And that’s OK! But if you’re feeling romantic, you have kiddos at home and want to decorate, or you simply like the holiday’s focus on goodies and treats, bring some shimmer home with a batch of glittering hearts. Meri Meri’s Pink Glitter Heart Garland is the epitome of festive Valentine’s Day style. Above and below, we see the garland in its pre-assembly form (minus the silver ribbon).

In fact, Meri Meri’s garland comes with a neon pink string for hanging, and it’s precisely this bright burst of color that makes the garland stand out. Neon and glitter: what’s not to love?!

Don’t forget that you can combine today’s featured supplies (tinsel, honeycomb balls, glittering hearts and silver ribbon) in new and interesting ways. Let your vignettes evolve as you move from New Year’s to Valentine’s Day. Revel in the sparkle. Let it bring a smile to your face. Soon winter will turn to spring and there will be some brightness outdoors as well!

Wishing you and yours a lovely start to the new year. Thanks for reading!

Decorating with Living Coral: Pantone’s Color of the Year 2019

It’s easy to get excited about Living Coral, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2019. Not only is this welcoming hue a more vivid rendition of the ever-popular Millennial Pink, it exudes warmth and life. The magic of Living Coral is in its ability to energize and soothe at the same time. With a range of interesting palette possibilities, it engages design lovers without overpowering the spaces it inhabits. Unless you want to revel in its power, of course! Today we explore the many ways that Living Coral can make an appearance in our homes, from accent walls to small pops of color.

Starting Small

If you’re looking to test the coral waters at home, there’s no harm in starting with a few small items and seeing how they enhance the vibe of your space. Beginning with the smallest of touches, these Coral Heart Outline Small Napkins from Meri Meri are the perfect romantic touch for quiet dinner in:

This storage box from H&M Home tempers a coral scallop design with crisp white for a fresh take on home organization:

Coral record player, anyone?! This Urban Outfitters find is hard to resist if you’re a design lover who’s also into vinyl:

Stay warm with a mohair blanket from Zara Home. Cozy yet breezy!…

Also from Zara Home is this Matte Velvet Throw Pillow Cover, perfectly refreshing in its lovely cotton construction. Because a punch of color for your sofa or bed is always a good idea!

For a gradient of coral tones, try Zara Home’s Ombre Throw Pillow Cover, which celebrates a range that spans the deepest coral to the softest shade of pink:

If you’re ready for a larger dose of color, refresh your living space with a vintage-style sofa in a soft shade of coral. Velvet and tufting make this piece from Urban Outfitters a true gem:

Paint It On

For a big dose of Living Coral, let the color work its magic in your home with the help of paint. A softer shade of red, coral brings an invigorating vibe to the room of your choice, while it can be calmed with beachy complements such as aqua and teal. Below we see a lovely seaside apartment in Greece, which juxtaposes an orangey shade of coral with a deep teal wall (featured at Dezeen):

The juxtaposition of coral and white is always fresh and light. Using an abundance of white to offset a coral accent wall creates a crisp look while also letting the coral truly shine. [photo below featured at Gypsycheese]

Coral just might have the potential to become the next Millennial Pink! So why not pair it with pink for a modern, monochromatic feel? [image below from Lifestyle Asia]

Color Palettes

Not only has Pantone provided us with a beautiful color for 2019, the color institute is quick to offer color palette and pairing suggestions! For starters, there’s something undeniably beachy about coral, and it’s no coincidence that Pantone has picked a shade that also shines the spotlight on the earth’s diminishing coral population. Celebrate nature’s beauty by pairing coral with sea-inspired shades, such as aqua and ocean blue. Sea green is another favorite! [image below from Lifestyle Asia]

These Round Pintuck Pillows from Urban Outfitters are the picture-perfect embodiment of Pantone’s “Under the Sea” coral palette!

Coral also shines when paired with shades of the sunset, as shown in this Sunset Alpaca Throw from CB2:

Be sure to check out additional palette suggestions on Pantone’s color palette inspiration page, and note that the site also features some fun Living Coral Products if you’re in the mood to shop. Cheers to a 2019 filled with design inspiration!
