Rattan Chair Design: 1 Chair, 3 Ways

Rattan is back! Didn’t you get the memo?! In all seriousness, there many reasons for a rattan resurgence, from a renewed interest in natural materials, to an appreciation for retro design. Not to mention, rattan pieces are versatile, blending in with modern, boho, eclectic, and vintage styles alike. Today we show you three ways to style a rattan chair. Our vignette features the Lily Rattan Arm Chair from Target, as well as CB2’s Shadow Circle Wall Mirror. By switching out a few key pieces in your setup, you can achieve three very different looks. Keep reading for all of the rattan chair design details…

*Photos and styling by Kate Simmons for Decoist

A Scalloped Pillow

Even the most modern of rattan chairs can be given a hefty dose of throwback style with a vintage-inspired pillow. Urban Outfitters’ Shelly Round Velvet Pillows feature radial stitching that channels the past and a velvety softness that’s very rooted in today’s design realm. Plus, a little bit of soft back support never hurts!

Whether you keep things neutral with a hint of blush or go for a burst of bright color, a well-chosen pillow can add dimension and new life to your chair. Plus, a nearby houseplant will help evoke a tropical feel. The key is to instantly create a serene vibe with retro-modern flair. Mission accomplished:

A White Cushion

Pad your chair with a white cushion, and you have a comfortable seating option that also boasts a clean, crisp look. Because the padding is on the seat, the design of your chair still shines through, especially since the entire back is still in plain view. To go along with this fresh, modern look, try adding a tall vase featuring a large green leaf, such as monstera. Our greenery is a faux CB2 find–one of our favorite faux finds ever!

Or skip the “plant on a side table” approach and place a belly basket at your feet. The look is earthy and relaxed, yet still modern. The Decorative Pop Up Belly Basket below is from Target. Its two-tone look adds a big dose of storage-friendly style to the vignette:

After all, you can’t deny the practical benefits of a large woven basket when it comes to reducing clutter!

Pure and Simple

Our last featured look is all about letting the lines and curves of the chair take center stage. Call it a “less-is-more” approach. Easy does it for this minimalist look. No pillows or cushions. But we’re certainly not opposed to a colorful table nearby, especially if it features a healthy houseplant in a simple concrete planter:

We hope today’s post has given you plenty of rattan chair design inspiration. Cheers to easy-breezy style any season of the year!

Back-to-School Style for Design Lovers of Any Age

Each July and August, top brands roll out the latest in dorm and apartment decor. It’s back-to-school season, after all! If the design is good, there’s no age limit to those who can enjoy shopping these new collections. The top three reasons we love dorm decor: it reflects current trends, it’s affordable, and it’s often space-saving. What better way to learn about the latest in modern design while honoring your budget and space constraints?! Below we’ve rounded up a stellar collection of dorm and apartment finds that can be enjoyed by all. Cheers to a big dose of back-to-school style! [decor below from Urban Outfitters]

Urban Outfitters’ Boho Campus Style

Nobody does dorm decor like Urban Outfitters. The brand’s On Campus collection manages to incorporate top trends with sophisticated style. As a bonus, there are always a few edgy pieces thrown in. Even if you’re not a young adult, you can enjoy perusing the new offerings, and no item is too small to be eye-catching. For starters, the these Ivy Ceramic Tumblers are available in natural and turquoise tones. Stoneware takes a dreamy turn, thanks to a speckled finish and the strategic use of glaze.

Timeless and classic, the Rosella Towel Rack is crafted from bamboo and rattan, creating just the right amount of Boho style, mixed with just the right amount of storage. Three bars and a base shelf get the job done:

We’ll never get tired of these Shelly Round Velvet Pillows, which have reflected a range of different color palettes in recent seasons. Versatile enough to work in a formal living room or a cheerful child’s room, they’re certainly perfect for the dorm room as well. And who doesn’t love a good scallop motif?!

For a big dose of texture, add the Geo Tufted Tassel Throw Blanket to your bed or sofa. Available in Honey and Rose (shown below), this substantial textile is the perfect finishing touch. The pattern proudly commands attention, yet neutral tones keep this blanket from taking over the space it inhabits.

Need a place to stash that throw when not in use? This Leaning Blanket Ladder is available in three unique color renditions. The two-tone version caught our attention:

A chill showpiece, the Gemma Floating Nightstand Shelf is so popular it’s on backorder. But some things are worth the wait, especially when they’re a budget-friendly $59!

Target’s Sleek Modern Selections

From the boho to the sleek/modern, we now turn our attention to some of Target‘s more streamlined pieces. If you regularly shop at this beloved everything-under-one-roof retailer, you know how much fun back-to-school season can be. Whether you’re looking for a neon pillowcase or you want a throw pillow with some attitude, there’s a find for every design flavor. Yet don’t underestimate the more sophisticated dorm decor offerings! Beautifully designed with its modern simplicity, the Project 62 Loring Writing Desk features a black metal base. Bonus: it can double as a console table.

This Touraco Writing Desk in brown and white in undeniably versatile. Place it in the most minimal of spaces so its retro-style white detailing can really shine, or give it the power to add eclectic flair to the most feminine of rooms:

If you like what you see above, do note that the Touraco line also offers a nightstand version of the design. Because who wouldn’t be happy waking up next to this every morning?!…

Whether you’re hunting for a desk chair or a dining chair, this Room Essentials Upholstered Chair in Gray has a sleek form and a channeled pattern that gives it instant contemporary style. Grooves make all the difference when it comes to compact seating:

If you need a sling chair for the corner and you’re on a tight budget, consider dropping a mere $45 on this Room Essentials Sling Chair. Bonus points if you accent it with a faux sheepskin pillow!

Of course, Target is known for much more than sleek modern style. It can play with the best of the boho, as shown in the delicious bedroom vignette below. Whether you’re heading back to school or you’re looking to update your space, there’s a lot of inspiration to take from this year’s dorm and apartment decor finds. ‘Tis the season for good design. Enjoy it!

Thanks for reading, and cheers to a fabulous fall.

A Fall 2019 Design Preview

The fall collections are rolling in, and we’re liking what we see! New and ongoing trends are getting the spotlight, at times with a fresh and surprising twist. Today we unveil some of our favorite pieces in the 2019 edition of our Fall Design Preview, complete with new arrivals from brands such as CB2 and Zara Home. This year’s featured finds are accessible and often affordable, so now is the time to shop for new treasures that will give your home an eye-catching seasonal update. Enjoy! [below: fall design from Zara Home]

*As a fun bonus, you can compare this year’s biggest styles and colors with last year’s fall trends by following the link.

Warm, Earthy Tones

Earthy hues are picture-perfect for fall. Not only do they mirror the warmth of the autumn leaves, they’re simply the natural evolution of today’s top color trends. Millennial pink is still going strong, but those who have loved this trend for the last few years are hungry for a new spin on blush. Enter terracotta and all of its tones. It pairs beautifully with pink (add lavender for a hip contrast). Think of the retro desert landscapes of the ’70s and ’80s! Below we see the Mambo Art Studio For Deny Desert Sun Wall Hanging from Urban Outfitters:

For a fun addition to a classic desert palette, try bringing in complementary hues such as mustard and navy. Instant richness and depth! CB2’s Crew Multicolor Jute Rug perfectly displays this earthy medley:

If you’re not ready to take the plunge with a wall hanging or a large rug, try adding a few terracotta planters into the mix. Go with a classic from your local nursery, or put a modern spin on the terracotta pot with this Cyrus Terracotta Planter from CB2:

If you’re sad to see summer coming to an end, revel in sun-loving plants such as cactus. They instantly channel a laid-back desert vibe. Bonus points if you find a terracotta-hued wall shelf to display your greenery. Powder-coated steel and a wavy hook design give Urban Outfitters’ Most Modest Walter Wall Shelf its memorable form:

Also from UO is this Malika Printed Rug, which reminds us that earthy tones are an ideal palette for celebrating a vintage-meets-boho look. Geo forms and relaxed lines bring this print to life.

Minimal Forms

Ornate design has its moments (remember the Hollywood Regency revival that peaked in the early years of this decade?). But so does simplicity. In more recent years, the design world has celebrated simple forms and the beauty of the materials themselves. Copper, concrete, brass, marble. Rather than being molded into detailed, formal structures, they’ve been showcased in the most basic but impactful of shapes. This season’s fall finds prove that geo forms and mixed materials are still going strong. Take CB2’s Gio Round Alabaster Sconce, designed by Mermelada Estudio and crafted from brass and alabaster:

The Memphis-Milano revival of recent years is still playing out in this fall’s design and decor offerings. The Terrazzo Black Round Serving Platter from CB2 creates a textured look with terrazzo and cement:

The forms don’t have to be clean-lined to make an impact. Rounded edges and a glazed finish give Urban Outfitters’ Ceramic Wall Hanging an earthy look. Bring on the neutral tones!

From wall art to textiles, designs featuring several large forms in understated hues (such as mustard and gray) continue to be popular this season. ferm LIVING’s Merge Kelim Rug is crafted from hand-dyed wool yarn. Color blocking is given added power by the overlapping geometry and less-is-more palette approach:

Textured Textiles

Texture is in the air, along with the upcoming fall breeze! From fringe to shaggy surfaces, the look that results is layered, cozy and dimensional. Urban Outfitters’ Tinsley Tufted Throw Pillow features a tufted surface in a stairstep pattern:

The Paloma Fringe Sham Set is softly embellished with lines that boast an eyelash fringe. Delicate, lived in, and ultimately welcoming, the rosy shams are perfectly on trend this season:

Rainbow motifs are alive and well in the realm of design, and the Faye Braided Lumbar Pillow swaps an array of colorful hues for texture. Braided applique strands in a uniform creamy tone put the focus on the lines and fringe, giving each pillow a modern-meets-boho look that is sure to be a welcome addition to any living room or bedroom.

Texture isn’t just about textiles. Be on the lookout for texture on a range of surfaces, from vases to wall art. Below we see Solace by William Parker, available at CB2:

Linen Love

Gloss and glam have their place, but this season, the worn look of linen has captured our attention. Comfort reigns, especially at the dining table. Zara Home’s Linen Tablecloth has the power to be the perfect backdrop to your favorite fall cheese board (and other dining endeavors). And not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but we could see this classic table covering under a Thanksgiving spread once November hits:

Whether you add one linen piece to your home or design your living room in shades of beige, linen can add subtle texture while signaling a shift from summer fun to more contemplative days. Below we see the Washed Linen Throw Pillow from Zara Home:

Linen has even made its way into the world of furniture, thanks to a new collection of curved pieces from CB2. The Archer Lacquered Linen Nightstand (designed by Ceci Thompson) features a lacquered layer of linen, along with a gray wash and a clear acrylic knob:

As summer turns to fall, we wish you a design-filled season of cozy textures, warm tones, and plenty of creative inspiration! Thanks for reading.
